FPPO: PIC Announces Start of Media Credentialing for Official Inaugural Events
- Tweet
WASHINGTON -- The Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) today announced that members of the media can now apply for credentials to cover official events for the second Inaugural of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, taking place from January 19-January 22 in Washington, DC. For the media's planning purposes only, the PIC also released additional details on official Inaugural events that will be open to media coverage, listed below.
This media credentialing process is separate from any tickets that members of the public may be able to apply for to participate in various Inaugural events. For more information on Inaugural events that are open to the public and how to request tickets, visit 2013pic.org.
Applications for credentials must be completed by Saturday, December 22 at 5:00 PM EDT. Please note that space is extremely limited at the open press Inaugural events and late requests for credentials will not be accepted. For a full description on how to apply for media credentials, and additional event details, please visit: 2013pic.org/media-credentials
Each Inaugural event will require an event-specific media credential to gain access for media coverage. Media organizations interested in covering multiple Inaugural events must apply for each event they wish to cover.
Requests for PIC media credentials do not guarantee access to the event or the space that a media outlet has requested. Applicants will receive written notification from the PIC specifying whether their requests for credentials have been granted.
The PIC does not issue credentials for the ceremonial swearing-in taking place at the U.S. Capitol on Monday, January 21. Per tradition, those credentials are issued by the Senate Media Galleries and overseen by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. The credential deadline for the swearing-in has passed but more information may be found here: http://www.inaugural.senate.gov/media
PRELIMINARY SCHEDULE OF INAUGURAL EVENTS THAT ARE OPEN TO MEDIA COVERAGE
Note: The schedule below is for planning purposes only. Additional details about the events below, as well as additional Inaugural events, will be released in the coming weeks.
Saturday, January 19
The schedule of official Inaugural activities will begin with the National Day of Service where President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Biden, and Dr. Jill Biden will participate in service projects in the Washington, DC area. The President will also deploy members of his Cabinet and ask all Americans to participate in service events on that day in communities across the country. The National Day of Service will continue a tradition the Obamas began during the 2009 Inaugural, and the main service event in DC will be open to the public and open press.
The service events that the President, the First Lady, the Vice President and Dr. Biden will participate in will be pooled press and therefore will not be open for credentialing.
That evening, there will also be a Children's Concert for military families and schoolchildren. That event will also be pooled press.
Sunday, January 20
The President and Vice President will participate in a Wreath Laying ceremony at Arlington National Ceremony. The ceremony will be pooled press.
In keeping with the requirements of the Constitution, the President will be formally sworn in by noon on Sunday, January 20, in an official ceremony at the White House. The Vice President will also be formally sworn in on Sunday. This follows the tradition of Inaugurations that have taken place in years past when January 20 has fallen on a Sunday. The President and Vice President will also participate in an Inaugural reception on Sunday. Both events will be pooled press.
Monday, January 21
The President and Vice President will attend a church service at St. John's Church. The President and Vice President’s arrival and departure will be pooled press and the church service will be print pool only.
Later, the President and Vice President will participate in the ceremonial Inaugural swearing-in ceremony on the west steps of the U.S. Capitol. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) oversees this ceremonial swearing-in, which is open press.
The President and Vice President will later participate in the traditional parade down Pennsylvania Avenue following the swearing-in ceremony. The parade and parade reviewing stand are open press.
That evening, the President, First Lady, Vice President and Dr. Biden will attend the official Inaugural Balls. All balls will be pooled press and at least one of these balls will be open press. Additional coverage opportunities are still being determined.
Tuesday, January 22
On Tuesday morning, the President and Vice President will attend the National Prayer Service at the Washington National Cathedral. Activities occurring inside the Cathedral will be pooled press, with limited space for additional still cameras and print correspondents. Activities happening outside of the Cathedral will be open press, but space will be limited.
The President will participate in an open house where he will greet visitors touring the White House. The event will be pooled press.
